The procedure is also known as biliopancreatic diversion with duodenal switch (BPD-DS)
This is very aggressive procedure in terms of weight loss and control of comorbidities.

This procedure is hybrid procedure and combination of restrictive and mal absorptive in nature.

In Duodenal switch, stomach is to be converted in to sleeve with help of stapling. The small intestine is cut and connected with outlet of sleeve in such a way that there will be very short segment of small intestine (Less than 100 cm) available to take care of process of digestion

Because of aggressive mal absorption, weight loss, weight maintenance and control of comorbidities mainly diabetes and dyslipidemia is excellent.

Advantage

  • A Higher percentage of excess weight loss verses purely restrictive gastric bypass.
  • Diet restriction is very less, which is certainly missing in other surgeries.
  • Themalabsorptive component of the DS is fully reversible and no intestine is removed.

Disadvantage

  • DS patients require blood tests regularly to keep a watch over deficiencies in life critical vitamins and minerals.
  • DS patients have a higher occurrence of smelly flatus and diarrhea.
  • The restrictive portion of DS is not reversible as the part of the stomach is removed.
  • The supplementations including multivitamins, calcium, protein is very much compulsory.
